RETROFIT RESEARCH: THE DATA

DATA POINTS
GATHERED
Through our retrofit survey we've been collecting data on passive house builds and retrofits.
Scroll on to discover the story told by our incoming data. Or use the menu bar at the left to navigate. Our submissions can arrive with fields missing, meaning that the data may look inconsistent or incomplete. As we gather more data, these inconsistencies will decrease. Know a retrofitter who would send us data on their build?

RETROFIT RESEARCH: IMPACT
One nuanced data point we're seeking to discover through our survey is the overall enthusiasm for and impact of retrofitting in the places we're studying. Data related to impact is sprinkled throughout this page, but here you can see which year had the most retrofit projects, how many places we're gathering data from and the average age of a building undergoing a retrofit.![]()

Cost is one of the most important considerations when undertaking a retrofit. For data gatherers, understanding the itemized costs for a project, as well as avergae general costs, is integral to uncovering its efficacy and returns–both financial and environmental.

One critical data area concerns savings, by which we mean the reduction in fuel use and cost enabled by a retrofit project. Here we show the average time it takes for a project to pay for itself, in addition to the total and per-project average reduction in CO2 caused by the projects surveyed to date. We also explore reductions in heating/cool and electricity and their reflected financial savings.

RETROFIT RESEARCH: NOTABLE DATA
Our data gathering is just beginning, but already we're starting to see some trends develop in the survey responses we've seen. Here we highlight some interesting data points that we've observed so far.

URBAN & SUBURBAN BUILDS
It seems that roughly two-thirds of the retrofit projects surveyed have been urban or suburban, while the other third are rural builds. The adjacent chart shows that the majority of projects are partial retrofits, with phased and whole-building retrofits making up the remaining projects.
